Style: Rye Beer
ABV: 6.3 IBU: 12
2018 World Beer Cup Silver winner for Rye Beer Category. This is southern Alberta, so let's talk crops! The hardiest of cereals, rye outperforms all other cover crops on infertile, sandy or acidic soil or on poorly prepared land. Nature can be a ruthless machine on the bald prairie, but our farmers have learned to ryes against the machine! This tough little grain adds character and complexity to our beer, bringing bready and spicy notes to a classic Rye style. Ryes Against the Machine is our tribute to autumn, hard working harvesters, and the rich agricultural heritage of Medicine Hat.

In 1908 a "phantom train" was seen barreling head-on toward a passenger train just outside of Dunmore, AB on two occasions by the same engineer and fireman, who kept quiet about the sighting after watching the ghost vessel veer off into the prairie night. Tragically, several days later a train collision occurred at that very location killing many crew members, including the driver of the train who saw the phantom premonition. This beer puts forth flavours of chocolate, roast, molasses, and caramel. Evened out with traditional hops, and accentuated with oats for a smooth finish. A perfect winter beverage!

I love this place. The beer is excellent; many great standard beers and a cool selection of more unique brews. Kids are allowed, you can bring in your own food, and there is a great selection of board games to play. The staff is friendly and helpful and you often see the owners having a pint and giving personal tours. I love a long afternoon of sampling beers and playing different board games with old and new friends!

Two years on from my last review and this Wonderful Brewery is now Perfect. Over a two dozen different brews, all with imaginative and entertaining names have graced the taps of this trendsetting brewpub, and their ever expanding menus offers near-perfect accompaniments to their hig quality craft beers. The food service menu matches the beers with complementing small bites to accompany and enhance your craft beverage selections. Without question, Hell's Basement is a great place to hang, sample and shop.
